In the ninth point of the New Economic Policy Action Plan, which consists of 21 measures, in 2025 the Government will enable the use of 50 percent of the benefits received on the Széchenyi Recreation Card (SZÉP card) for housing purposes. From their non-wage allowance, it becomes possible to purchase hardware, building materials, paint, glass, furniture, and lighting equipment, among other things.
In January-October 2024, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups was close to HUF 348 billion, however, almost HUF 90 billion of free funds are still available on SZÉP cards, which, thanks to the government's measures, can provide substantial support to Hungarian families in the renovation of their homes and the comfort of their apartments in its repair.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of National Economy (NGM), the SZÉP card will be digitized in accordance with established online consumer habits in order to make it easier to use. In order to support an active lifestyle, a new pocket is opened on the SZÉP card called Active Hungarians. The amount of the non-wage allowance that can be paid via the card will therefore increase by HUF 10,000 per month.
According to the draft released for social consultation, employees will be able to use the HUF 10,000 per month that can be paid in this way exclusively for sports and services related to an active lifestyle. Within this framework, the benefit can be used, among other things, for the rental of leisure or sports equipment, for sports or leisure training, or even for the financing of sports association activities.
As a result of the government's measure, the amount that can be paid annually via the SZÉP card will thus increase by HUF 10,000 per month and HUF 120,000 per year, i.e. from 450,000 to 570,000 in total, the NGM announced.
